JBellOct 13, My friend has the 9g in his ECDI. Seems like a lovely smooth box with a very long top gear. YugguyOct 13, The 9G box is very long legged, mines sits at 1, RPM for 70mph. It doesn't often stay in 9th but you only know what gear you're in by looking at the display. Another huge benefit of the 9G box is that it coasts better than a manual knocked out of gear. You'll find yourself just braking coasting behind other vehicles as it just doesn't lose speed, great for fuel economy if you plan ahead and don't brake.

I've been reading with interest the sticky about, amongst other things, the software update for the seven speed auto gearbox and wonder what exactly was the defect it fixed? Can anyone please describe the symptoms of the fault?
Many thanks. The main complaint was hard changes fro 1 and 2 gears, this involves someone with STAR who knows the boxes to re adapt the torque converter lock up. I know that Colin at MBS is very good at this and I have been in two cars that he has set up and the changes were seamless and you never felt a thing.
It's to fix the harsh two into one shift. It can help but IMHO it's such a complex box missing parts like sprag clutches over the 5g box to smooth down changes. I never liked a single car I've driven with this box. You should study the workings Steve of the 7g box, there is more than one way to skin a cat. The fact that adaption done correctly fixes most of these faults, and the fact that most of us have perfect changes shows that it is not needed, things do move forward with new ways of doing things.
This subject becomes boring Steve and you have no right at all to insist that my 7g is anything other than a delightful perfect box, the same as many others have told you. Exjag - If you are happy with the box at the moment, I'd leave well alone.
I had a software update on my 7G done in March last year to fix a harsh shift from 2nd - 1st. This happened only when the box was cold, it was fine when warm. Apart from that, I thought the 7G box was excellent with very smooth predictable shifts and an uncanny knack of being in the right gear nearly all the time. Since the software upodate, the professional chauffeur has been replaced by a learner driver and the car has never been right since. It has been back to 2 main dealers and one indy to reset the adaptions in an attempt to restore the previously excellent performance - with only limited success.
I can tolerate the car now, but it is not as good as it was or should be. Very few people seem to be able to set up these gearboxes correctly, so my advice would be to leave it alone and keep the dealer away from it. JodelJan 6, Well if the box is bad don't buy it. In auto mode, there will still be a slight jerk when changing from 2nd to 1st. And I notice that from 2nd to 3rd, the car will pull away slightly quicker just when the gear has been engaged.
Any 7G-Tronic users out there facing this problem? Mercedes auto-transmission isn't jerk free, so it could have some jerks whilst changing gears. Most they could do is probably to change the transmission fluid or re-program the ecu.
Previously my dads Citroen C5 had similar problems but after uploading an updated software gear change is brisky and smoother. But still got the down shift problem which they cannot resolve. There's always the thumping feeling from 3rd gear to 2nd. I wonder why conti have these problems. Probably multi-speed gearbox is still in the tuning stage.
7G-tronic problem - Help
The Japanese dun have these problems. The previous models of mercs with 4-speed gearbox have no problems. I think it's still in the stage of perfecting the software. Went for repairs thrice already and problem is not fixed. So, all Mercedes are like this? However, changing from 2nd, 3rd, 4th all the way to 7th and vice-versa are jerk-free. Its only 2nd to 1st Its not hard acceleration or pronounced engine brake. It only happened when braking and when the gear shift from 2nd to 1st.
It will lag awhile then the huge jerk comes after it. My car BMW had the same problem when slowing down to a stop and when it's shifts from 3rd to 2nd all BMW's start on 2nd gear unless in Sports modethere will be a jerk.
Did some research and found out it was an issue. Called PML and booked my car in for a transmission software reflash.
This early problem with 7 Gtronic is discussed at MBWorld. A new gear firmware is avail to resolve it. How new is gear firmware? Cause my vehicle just went for repairs last 2 weeks and its still not fixed.
Not trying to start a war here and not blasting the Merc brand but if its part of the design
